Hiking Fagaras main ridge, Romanian mountains – meeting high expectations

Things looked pretty difficult when Linda told me, upon arrival, that this trip to Romania was presented to her as “the best hiking trip one can have””. Not before mentioning, as a side note, that she had traveled across the continents, seeing most the world known attractions around the globe :-). In between trips, she was living in a quiet island, famous around the world for harbouring the capital city of British Columbia, Canada.

That’s what I’d call high expectations, I told myself while driving t… (>>>)

Belgian group of hikers enjoying a tour in Fagaras and Bucegi mountains, Romania

Hiking in Romania it is an unexpected experience for most of the visitors. And like this it was for the Belgium group of hikers from this August. As they are coming from a flat country like Belgium, cycling is the most common sport there. Also, they were good for hiking too, especially on  long hikes witch involve a lot of climbing. Not the last, they were jealous when they saw Transfagarasean highway, a long asphalt road with climb 1500 meters, in central part of Fagaras mountains. Of course I told them that our Swedish friends  climb it … (>>>)

Fagaras ridge traverse, andurance hiking in Romania

I’m not sure how to say this, but sometimes words are not enough to describe the pleasure of meeting some people or, even more, taking tours on the mountains with them. I was speechless after I met Arnon and crossed most of the Fagaras ridge with him, in just two days. I did this tour many times before, not as fast as now, but I enjoyed it every single time! I was speechless to see how much a person can enjoy a tour like this and how much fun such a tour can be!

First, I planned this trip together with Tiberiu from Bucharest, who said he was fit enough f… (>>>)

Climbing highest peak in Romania, rhododendron tour in Fagaras mountains

An unusually crowded Podragu hut welcomed us mid-June for a three days escape up on the Fagaras Ridge. Together with Marga and Thomas we climbed up to Moldoveanu Peak, marching through patches of blooming rhododendrons, enjoying some marvelous views and nice weather. It was a surprise to see so many trekkers up the mountain so early in the season. Most of them were from outside Romania, coming from France, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Israel. Apart from the staff working at the Podragu hut and some shepherds scattered along the trail… (>>>)

Exploring Fagaras mountains

It was a tour like the tours have to be! I’m not saying that I not enjoy all my tours, because I really enjoy all my tours, but this one was special because of the tranquility of the Astird, Susanne and Holger, and not the last, because like all this summer, the weather was the right one for a hike in Fagaras mountains!

Our tour start from Ucea de Sus village, at the bottom of Fagaras mountains, with a hike of 6 1/2 hours to Podragu hut, where we arrived just with seconds before a heavy rain start, but as I said, we were lucky with the weather.  … (>>>)
