A thirteen strong group of us, all keen mountaineers, from various parts of Ireland have been for the past number of years, taking a week out in early September to trek another new destination for us across the mountains of Europe. This year it was to be the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania,Romania.
After some research earlier in the year it was decided, due to the limited time we had, seven days, that we should the services of a local guide. Iulian was to be our guide for the week.
The service that Iulian provided was second to none and I … (>>>)
About Sigge and Mike I’ve heard last year. They were described as mountainbikers with very good tehnical skills so that made me pretty much eager to meet them. And I just say this: It all worthed. This year they came with Thomas and we rode the Carpathian Expert Ride wich is the most difficult tour offered by MTBtours.ro – and Mountainguide.ro in Romania at this point. I had big expectations from the whole trip but I have to confess: the tour and the way of riding was so much beyond my dreams.
With this team it was alway… (>>>)
It was a tour like not other! In 11 days we hiked ~230 km, we climbed 12.000 meters and we descent 12.000 meters. Yes, in Romanian Carpathian mountains! And we hiked in wild mountains, where we meet just shepherds, sheep and dogs, and as usualy just few persons.
Juergen and Michael came from Germany, with a only wish: to do a traverse of Carpathian mountains in Romania, and we did it!
I hiked all of this mountains many times, but not in row, so also was really pleasure for me to do this tour! We stay in mountain huts, mountain refuge and tents! W… (>>>)
Sometimes less is more, even in mountaineering
Every now and then we have guests that overestimate their abilities – or underestimate the difficulties of the Romanian trails high up in the mountains. The altitudes here are not as impressive as in the Alps or the Dolomite mountains (the main ridges are just above 2000m with highest peaks barely scratching the 2500m limit), but the vertical drops from the valleys to the main ridges are more or less similar, with equally demanding trails. We are proud to say that we never let that sp… (>>>)
Maybe the mountains are the same as last weekend, but the weather, the clouds and the hikers make the difference as always. This weekend, 26-27 November, I was traversing Bucegi mountains with Beth, Carmen, Marc and Catalin, on a easier but challenging route. We hiked on the plateau of Bucegi mountains from Babele cable car station to Omu peak the highest peak in Bucegi mountains, enjoying the views which surround us wherever we look, because the weather was one more time on our side.
I left Brasov early morning, the clouds were the same … (>>>)
I meet Mike almost three years ago, when he asked me for another challenging tour in Romanian mountains, climbing Moldoveanu peak, our highest peak, in just two days. Usually when somebody ask about this type of tour, are two options: very well prepared for hiking, or didn’t know exactly how are Fagaras mountains. Well, Mike do not disappoint me, and he’s part of the first option, very well prepared for hiking, in fact he’s a Marathon runner. So three years ago we were just fast and happy (not furious like the movie) t… (>>>)
A short but nice hiking tour in Bucegi mountains, with a group of men from Holland. They choose to meet for a hiking tour in Romania, and they came from all over the world, from Amsterdam, from Munich and from … Shanghai. We had good weather, and this was a good part, because they enjoy the tour.
First night we stayed in Brasov city, enjoying a good dinner and visiting the city. Next day we climbed Omu peak in Bucegi mountains, and we hiked to Ialomita valley on the border between Austro – Hungarian empire and Romania, Drumul Gra… (>>>)
