Ski touring season in Romania, 2020 winter

The 2019-2020 skiing season was, to put it mildly, a weird one. It started with a very long and warm autumn, delaying the first snow up the mountains for the end of December. It continued with a cold but dry January, followed by a warm and rainy (when not dry) February and March. We were still hoping for some good snow later in March or April, two months that are normally rather good for ski touring at higher altitudes in the Carpathian Mountains. Schi de tura cu prieteni, muntii Bucegi si Ciucas

We started this ski touring weekend for friends back in 2012, and since then we are honoring this nice tradition every winter. During these eight years some people have left the group, others joined later, and some are part of the adventure from the very beginning. We’ve had brilliant powder snow, or spring slush, freezing cold in bitter blizzard or nice, warm temperatures while skiing among spring crocuses. Tura de schi fond in muntii Bucegi si Postavarul, Poiana Brasov

At the end of March snow Gods were on our side, snow was enough and good quality for our cross country skiing tour in Bucegi and Postavaru mountains. The group of happy people from Genova enjoy the tour all the time, despite the weather conditions, low visibility, cold and windy, but hey, is March, is winter! Schi de tura in Carpatii Romanesti

First we were in Fagaras mountains, and we take advantage of good snow. And then the low temperatures, cloudy weather and strong winds make us to leave with a day early to Bucegi mountains. And as always, weather was on our side, during the traverse from Simon mountain village to Ialomita valley but also on next days. Powder and blu sky! Tura de iarna in magica Transilvanie

 

The trails we do hike tours, mountain biking adventures or trail running trips for three seasons along the year suffer a magical transformation during the winter months. No flocks of sheep or scattered cows grazing on the vast pastures, no dogs roaming around the deserted farms, nothing to disturb a frozen landscape. Everything comes to a stand still, as if mesmerized by the truly unique landscape.

Tura de spliboard in Romania, muntii Fagaras si Bucegi

Michael and his wife Bianca were here, in Bucegi mountains last year at begin of January, and we did a ski touring, splitboard and snowshoeing trip in Bucegi mountains. We start at Sinaia resort, on beautiful spring time, even if was 5th of January, enjoying some some sunny days in Bucegi central part, and ending in big powder snow in Simon and Moeciu de Sus mountain villages!

O tura de familie pe schiuri in Transilvania

This is happening when you son study medicine in Cluj Napoca University: you go to visit him, but you bring your ski touring gear with you, because are some nice mountains and powder to ski! And this Octavian and Bettina did, they came for a ski tour in Fagaras and Bucegi montains, one of the best and most accessible mountains for ski touring in Romania. Even if the weather at Balea lake was a truly winter weather, cold and wind storms, we enjoyed blue sky and powder snow during our trips in Bucegi mountains.

Cu schiurile de fond prin Tara Branului

The rolling hills of the Bran Country are a perfect place for hiking and mountain biking tours for most of the year, but they are also a brilliant destination for ski shoeing or, when snow allows it, for some incredible Back Country skiing days.

The mountain villages of Simon, Magura, Pestera and Sirnea, the lower altitude trails of the Piatra Craiului National Park and the Bucegi Natural Park were the scenery in which we thoroughly enjoyed five days of great outdoors.

Romanian mountains can be a destinations for short trips, hiking, walking, mountain biking, and why not, for ski touring. With a lot of experience and a good logistic, but off course, with good weather and snow conditions, we enjoyed 4 days of ski touring in Bucegi mountains, on last March. I meet Nicolas many years ago, he’s now based in France, but he still love Carpathian mountains, and with each occasion he share his love with his friends in France. At the beginning of our tour, Bucegi mountains were just a big desert, without sand, sorry, snow! But at least was blue sky!

Second day, the same blue sky, but we manage to find some nice powder for some long lines! Well, then we had a situation, meaning a snow storm came over Bucegi, and true winter finally arrived in Carpathian mountains.
